Mapping fun :: ESRI Imagery Map vs Google Satellite Map

Being a civil engineer and working as application developer is indeed something one generally do not expect. As a part of the job, this time around, I have to dig deep into ArcGIS web API and maybe google map API as well.

As a starting point to learn and use those APIs, I have been browsing arcgis site a lot; the blog, the gallery and the forum. Till now I haven't learnt much but yes seems like playing around with ArcGIS and dojo would be a lot of fun. Fun in the sense that I will be developing something for ArcGIS and GIS technology is something that every civil engineer eyes to learn about since college days. But ArcGIS, actually, is a vast software with diverse application field, its not only civil engineering but biology guys and probably guys from other fields use it as well.

Its nice to see that one can embed ESRI powered maps as well as google map in no time; even a html neophyte can. Just get some code and paste it in your web page in proper place and you will get those dynamic maps and that's what I wanted to show in this post. But this is not the end of the journey but a beginning, I have to develop usable web application for clients which I won't be sharing with you guys since whatever I develop would be property of my company.

With that said, a quick remark about the difference between those maps that I have noticed. Obviously google is a internet king (or is it facebook that is becoming web king?) and everybody uses google, and its not only search service provider, map being among the famous and most used service from google. As a result there are lots of taggings, labels and infos in google map while while ESRI powered map is like satellite image with very few details and of course ESRI map is not something that everyone uses; its for GIS related stuffs only.

Another thing I've noticed is ESRI map was obviously older but probably since the satellite images were taken during spring, I loved the greenery in my area while google map has quite boring and dull images.

I think this post is also getting boring. So that's etc for now, meet you in other posts.
